2010 Signing Day Recap: Florida Gators

Hey there guys,
Today's installment of 2010 Signing Day Recap will be covering the Florida Gators, who are coming off a 13-1 (8-1) season that ended with a loss in the SEC Championship Game to eventual National Champion Alabama and than DESTROYING Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl. This has been an interesting offseason with all of the drama surrounding Head Coach Urban Meyer and also Defensive Coordinator Charlie Strong left to be the HC at Louisville.

Ronald Powell

Name/Pos/Grade*

Ronald Powell/DE/94.3
Eval: Best Defensive End in the Nation this year. And it is not just because he is a great athlete but he is one of the smartest high school football players I've watched. His play recognition is outstanding rarely getting fooled, quickly adjusting to reverses, play action, etc. Shows enough strength to stop a OL trying to run block and enough to be an effective bull rusher when pass rushing. Doesn't avoid contact and brings a powerful punch when attacking an offensive lineman with solid technique in shedding the lineman. Was athletic enough to play LB, TE, RB, and DE in high school and Florida even told him he could play goal line TE. A great player who needs to put on about 20-25 pounds but can make an impact immediately.

Dominique Easley/DT/94.0
Eval: I love this DT as he reminds me of a player close to home, Peria Jerry, the original Land Shark. He can add about 30 pounds (6'2 260) but he displays an absolute dominating quickness and explosion off the snap often seeming like he knows the snap count of the offense better than the lineman. He is really good with his hands but needs to be a little more consistent as he is going to be playing much better competition in college. He also seems to lack a a really good move when pass rushing as he got by with bull rushing in high school. Still with a little bit of coaching he can be a DOMINANT defensive tackle in the SEC.

Matt Elam/S/93.6
Eval: Great athlete that can play a number of positions but projects more as a SS on the college level in my opinion. Ferocious hitter that shows great explosion when going in for a hit, played linebacker in high school, he is not afraid of contact and was great for someone his size (6'0 205) when taking on blockers, using his quickness to shed them. Did I mention he's a nasty hitter? If you don't believe me you will soon. Is pretty solid in coverage showing flexible hips and a solid break upon the ball. As physical as he is with ball carriers has trouble recovering if he makes a mistake when making contact on the line against WRs, and he when he backs off he often gives too much cushion. When tackling often ducks his head and will sometimes hope the contact knocks the ball carrier down. Needs to wrap up better. Reminds me of a smaller Taylor Mays.

Shariff Floyd/DT/91.7
Eval: Great young Defensive Tackle that can play that run stuffer in any defense. In his film he is often taking on double teams and stuffing them at the line, with a powerful base and solid footwork he is strong enough that he can often stuff the double team and then move them back. Doesn't offer much as a pass rusher other than collapsing the pocket by way of bull rush. Looks bigger than he is (6'3 309) and is extremely strong. Above average quickness and explosion off the ball. He can also play offensive line. Think Dan Williams of Tennessee this past season.

Jonathan Dowling/S/90.4
Eval: Tall Defensive back (6'3 180) that plays more of a centerfield than he does a Safety position. He is an extremely smart FS that is one of the best defensive backs in this class, understands that nobody should beat him deep and makes this his first priority. Outstanding leaping ability and good hands for a pure defensive back. Has great vision when playing FS and has a knack for being able to understand the play and read a QBs eyes. Great at recognizing the play he does need to become a better tackler. He often just tries to arm tackle. Not very physical. Smart player that has a bright future ahead of him.

Chris Dunkley/WR/89.6

Joshua Shaw/CB/89.4

Gerald Christian/TE/89.3

Jaylen Watkins/CB.89.1

Chaz Green/OT/88.9

Ian Silberman/OT/88.6

Mack Brown/RB/88.5

Cody Riggs/CB/88.0

Leon Orr/DT/87.7

Michael Taylor/MLB/87.5

Adrian Coxson/WR/86.2

Solomon Patton/WR/85.2

Jordan Haden/S/84.7

Lynden Trail/DE/84.4

Neiron Ball/OLB/83.7

Quinton Dunbar/WR/83.6

Travon Van/Ath/82.7

Trey Burton/QB/82.0

Gideon Ajagbe/OLB/81.7

Robert Clark/CB/74.3

Tyler Murphy/Ath/70.5

Michael McFarland/TE/64.5

Darrin Kitchens/OLB/61.7

Logan Young's Staircase: Even a bad heart couldn't keep Urban away from the possibility of inking this class. It's what the foundation of a championship is built on. Three five star defensive linemen. Florida is part of the landshark movement now. Ole Miss = trendsetters. Defense overall dominated the class. That's what wins games in the SEC. This is far and away the best class in the SEC this year.

Jerrell Powe's Scooter: He was really drunk last night and he sent me this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgbBP9Em00A
Really though you should watch it.

Batteman: What a ridiculous class. I mean they covered all the stops here. They got a QB, RB, WRs, TE, Line (though I think they could have signed an interior offensive lineman to help offset the loss of Maurkice Pouncey) they signed, what could be in the next 2-3 years the most dominant defensive line in college football, they signed some solid SEC LBs, and one of the best defensive back classes I have ever laid eyes upon. Imagine 3 years from now looking at a defense with Powell, Floyd, Easley, and Trail, a 6'7 DE that may grow into a monster, and the Safeties are Elam and Dowling, with the CBs Joshua Shaw and Jaylen Watkins, 2 tall and very athletic CBs. This class was heavy on defense and play makers. 2 solid OTs in Chaz Green and Silberman. "Easley" the best class in the SEC.

Grade Rating
A - Should make an impact IMMEDIATELY, great player expected to eventually be a top pro prospect. The kind of guy you tell your kids/grandkids about.
B - Can make an impact within the first year or two that he steps on campus. Great Pro Potential, and an eventual Star in the SEC.
C - Could develop in to a solid starter with some pro potential.
D - Developmental talent but lacks the physical tools to really be a star in the SEC. Most likely a special teams contributor or role player. Probably stolen from the Sun Belt.
F - Sleeper; Project Player; not enough information to really get an idea about the player. Most likely not going to make an impact until late in college career.
