SEC Post Season Awards

Hey there guys,
This was a great season in the SEC this past season and as sad as I am to see it go it means that there football is ever closer to starting back up (ha ha.) Anyway, I have in here my SEC Player of the Year, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, and SEC coach of the Year to go along with my All SEC 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and Frosh teams. Should be fun. Hope you guys enjoy.

SEC Player of the Year:
Devan Downey, SR, Guard, South Carolina

Despite his teams struggles the South Carolina Gamecocks had the best player in the SEC, yes John Wall was a great player, yes DeMarcus Cousins was dominant at times down low, but both of those guys played for Kentucky. Who did Devan Downey have? Sam Muldrow? Raise your hand if you are not a South Carolina fan, and can tell me something about Muldrow's season. Don't worry I'll wait. Downey lead the SEC in Scoring and Steals per game and was also in the top ten in the SEC in assists per game. He was the best defensive guard and he lead the SEC in scoring? SEC Player of the year.

Honorable Mention: Kent G John Wall, Kent F DeMarcus Cousins

SEC Defensive Player of the Year:
Jarvis Varnado, SR, Forward, Mississippi State

This wasn't even really a contest. He broke the NCAA record for Blocks in a Career, and averaged 4.8 blocks per game. That is just ridiculous. And there is not a stat that keeps track of how many teams had to alter their offense because of Varnado, or the number of players that drove the lane only to soil themselves when he stepped towards them. He was easily the best defensive player in the conference this year, and maybe I am the only one that thinks this but if I was picking a college team using only SEC Players my first pick would be Varnado. He rebounds and he plays ridiculous defense.

Honorable Mention: SC G Devan Downey, SC F Sam Muldrow

SEC Freshman of the Year:
DeMarcus Cousins, FR, Forward, Kentucky

Even though fellow teammate John Wall got all of the attention this season as the great freshman he is I think that DeMarcus Cousins was the more impressive of the two to me. I say this because, not only did DeMarcus Cousins put up great numbers, 15.6ppg 10.1rpb 1.8bpg, all in the top ten in the SEC, but he did so playing almost a full 12 minutes less per game than Wall. Think about it. That is a full quarter in the NBA that he played less than Wall. Cousins ranked 21st in the NCAA in rebounds per game, but of the top 40 rebounders in the NCAA Cousins was #1 in Rebounds per 40 minutes. Despite John Wall's ridiculous 6 assists per game (#6 NCAA) he is not #1 in assists per 40 minutes, in fact John Wall isn't even in the top 5 in asst/to ratio. Despite his foul troubles no freshman dominated when they were on the floor quite like Cousins did in the SEC.

Honorable Mention: Kent G John Wall, SC F Sam Muldrow

SEC Coach of the Year:
Bruce Pearl, Head Coach, Tennessee

No Brainer, and while Tennessee was never the best team in the conference they are a team that has defeated the #1 and #2 teams in the country, all without Tyler Smith, arguably the best player on the team. Smith was a great post player and, along side Wayne Chism, was the best post combo in the SEC. But after the well documented charges on Tyler Smith and several other players Tennessee was playing shorthanded this season and yet they are still ranked in the top 15 and have an upset of #2 Kentucky to go along with it. What a wonderful job Pearl has done there.
