| Auburn QB Cam Newton |
As was the case last week I am really behind on my work, mostly because I have had to work all week.
Anyway here are my picks for the five championship games this week, and If I have time I will add the rest of the picks for the BCS conference sometime later this evening.
* 4:22 pm - I am posting this early to get my SEC Championship pick out there. I will update as I add the rest of my picks.
Friday December 3rd
MAC Championship Game
#25 Northern Illinois vs. Miami (OH)
N. Illinois is having an incredible season, destroying their opponents along the way, beating MAC opponents 47.8 - 15.9 this season. The "other" Miami is one of the great stories of the 2010 season, as they were winless in 2009, but have come back to go 8-4 and win their division. While I want to root for M(OH) it's hard to go against the Huskies. Their offense has been dominant at the end of the season, averaging 9.5 yards per pass and 9.0 yards per rush, and their defense is even better (opp 5.1 and 4.0) on their way to beating opponents 65.0-18.0 in November. I think Miami will give them a small game for about a quarter but the Huskies will cruise the rest of the way en route to a Conference Championship.
My Pick: N. Illinois 41 Miami (OH) 24
Proj Pass: N. Illinois 207.2 yards (7.3 ypa) / Miami (OH) 215.2 yards (6.1 ypa)
Proj Rush: N. Illinois 219.5 yards (4.5 ypa) / Miami (OH) 130.7 yards (4.1 ypa)
Saturday December 4th
SEC Championship Game
#1 Auburn vs. #19 South Carolina
This rematch pits my #1 rushing offense in the SEC with my #1 rushing defense. Cameron Newton is a sure pick for the Heisman while the Gamecocks are enjoying some great seasons from their star freshman RB Marcus Lattimore, QB Stephen Garcia, and sophomore WR Alshon Jeffrey. Newton will present many problems for the Gamecock defense, but having faced him before, I do expect them to be marginally better. While they have the best rush defense they also have they have my #11 pass defense in the SEC, and Newton has proven over the past few weeks that he can throw the ball as well. Expect Tiger WR Darvin Adams and TE Phillip Lutzenkirchen (I have no idea if I spelled that right) to have big days for the Tigers against the South Carolina secondary. I do expect for the Gamecocks to be able to keep this game close, because they have the receivers to be able tear apart this Auburn secondary which ranks near the bottom of my pass d power rankings as well. Garcia and his tall talented group of WRs should all have big days, but South Carolina won't have a chance if they can't get Lattimore going on the ground. In their previous match up Auburn shut down Lattimore and while they were able to move the ball the South Carolina offense just wasn't the same. If the Gamecocks can get Lattimore going they can work the pass even more on the Auburn secondary, and can keep the ball out of Newton's hands. I expect for Auburn to win this game however as their defense shows this uncanny ability to be awful in the first half but step up big time in the second half.
My Pick: Auburn 37 South Carolina 30
Proj Pass: Auburn 231.7 yards (7.9 ypa) / South Carolina 250.7 yards (8.0 ypa)
Proj Rush: Auburn 233.4 yards (4.2 ypa) / South Carolina 145.8 yards (3.6 ypa)
