Friday May 28th Daily Picks

Hey there guys,

Well yesterday was my best day since I have started back, as I went 8-4 (8-4 ATS), and I even went 4-2 in my Upset Picks as the Astro's gave up they tying run in the bottom of the 9th and then the winning run in the 10th as the Brewers came from behind to steal a 4-3 win; Ted Lilly surprised me as he ended up going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out 5, and not allowing a run, as the Cubs pulled the upset of the Dodgers 1-0. Although I missed those I did foresee that the Rockies would dismiss the Diamondbacks with ease, which they did 8-2 behind the bats of Ryan Spillborghs (3-4 1hr 2rbi), Carlos Gonzalez (3-4 1hr 1rbi) and Troy Tulowitzki (2-4 1hr 2rbi); I also called the Mets to sweep the Phillies which they did, shutting them out in all 3 games of their sweep, with Mike Pelfrey going 7 innings with 5 K's. Jose Reyes also played a big part, going 3-4 with 2 rbi, which is big because if Reyes gets going then this offense is going to pick up, and if they can continue to get better along with some decent pitching they have a shot at just maybe taking the NL East from the Phiting Phils. In my two Game(s) of they Day I also called a couple of upsets as the third time was a charm in my Minnesota over New York pick, which was mainly helped out by the fantastic day at the plate by Jason Kubel, who went 3/4 with 2 homers and 5 rbi; my other big game upset came with the Braves as I saw them completing the series win over the Marlins with an 8-3 final, as Yunel Escobar looked like he might be on his way back from injury as he went 2-3 with an rbi as well.

Today looks like it might provide some good action, granted I don't have any upsets for you but there are some solid match ups as the Cardinals head to Chicago in the 2nd biggest rivalry in baseball, the Yankees try to ward off the Red Sox hot run as they take on the Indians in New York, the White Sox are trying to turn things around as they head to Tampa to take on the Rays who are trying to recover after being swept by the Red Sox at home, the Reds try to keep atop of the NL Central as they take on the Astros, the Marlins and the Phillies play in a very big series at the Marlins as the Phils try to hold on to first place in the NL East with the Braves a game and a half back hosting the Pirates, and in what may be the game of the day the Rangers and the Twins meet up tonight in a battle of Division Leaders.

Hope you guys enjoy

5/28 Picks

*Game(s) of the Day*

Texas Rangers @ Minnesota Twins (-1.5)(9.0)
Colby Lewis (Proj ERA 3.86) vs. Kevin Slowey (4.76)

Preview: This looks like a very good game as Colby Lewis is a pretty good pitcher, but he'll have to face off against one of the top 5 players in baseball so far this season in Justin Morneau, not Joe Mauer, one of the best players in baseball, but Justin Morneau. Throw in leadoff hitter Denard Span and Lewis is going to have a lot to deal with tonight. Especially seeing as the Twins are one of the best Home teams in all of baseball. Who said the move out doors would be difficult? Vlad Guerrero helps to send Slowey to the bench early but the Twins win in the end.

My Pick: Twins 5-4

The Rest

Cardinals (-1.5)(6.5) @ Cubs
Chris Carpenter (3.35) vs. Randy Wells (4.43)
My Pick: Cardinals 4-3
Why? Chris Carpenter. And the Cardinals bullpen. Randy Wells is a solid pitcher but I just do not foresee a good outing from him tonight. The Cardinals struggled a bit this past weekend because of great pitching from the Padres. Wells is not that great of a pitcher.

Indians @ Yankees (-1.5)(9.0
Fausto Carmona (3.49) vs. Phil Hughes (3.29)
My Pick: Yankees 6-4
Why? The Indians are a wonderful relief for the Yankees after having played a ridiculous schedule recently that included the Twins (twice) Red Sox (twice) Mets, and Tigers. Phil Hughes is a solid pitcher and I think he'll be the key in the Yanks win tonight.

Athletics @ Tigers (-1.5)(9.0)
Ben Sheets (5.64) vs. Dontrelle Willis (5.32)
My Pick: Tigers 5-4
Why? Both of these pitchers used to be big stars but are now back of the rotation starters that occasionally are effective. The best bullpen will win this one. Advantage Detroit.

Orioles @ Blue Jays (-1.5)(8.0)
Kevin Millwood (3.97) vs. Shaun Marcum (2.82)
My Picks: Blue Jays 5-3
Why? This looks like a fantastic pitcher battle between Millwood and Marcum but after that everything is going towards the Blue Jays. Offense and the Bullpen are both big advantages to the Blue Jays. I like Marcum to pitch 7+ in a Blue Jays win.

White Sox @ Rays (-1.5)
Freddy Garcia (5.53) vs. David Price (2.60)
My Pick: Rays 5-3
Why? If the season were to end today David Price would bring home the Cy Young award. Freddy Garcia? Not so much. The White Sox are hoping for a turnaround so they can make a push towards the playoffs. The Rays are hoping they can turn around their play at home after getting swept by the Red Sox. I think they'll be able to take out these sox.

Astros @ Reds (-1.5)(8.5)
Wandy Rodriguez (4.48) vs. Sam LeCure (3.36)
My Pick: Reds 5-4
Why? Normally I would be thinking that the Reds would blow away the Astros but LeCure is making his first Major League appearance and it will be interesting to see how he fairs in his first game.

Royals @ Red Sox (-1.5)(9.5)
Kyle Davies (5.33) vs. Tim Wakefield (4.33)
My Pick: Red Sox 6-4
Why? The Royals ended the Red Sox win streak yesterday but I think Wakefield and the BoSox turn things around tonight

Phillies @ Marlins (-1.5)(9.5)
Kyle Kendrick (4.82) vs. Chris Volstad (3.47)
My Pick: Marlins 6-5
Why? The Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball, but they are cold as ice. They were shut out in a recent 3 game sweep by the Mets and with Kendrick on the mound they are going to need offense.

Pirates @ Braves (-1.5)(8.5)
Zach Duke (4.23) vs. Derek Lowe (4.94)
My Pick: Braves 5-4
Why? Derek Lowe has never lost to the Pirates. And the Braves are red hot. And the Pirates are the Pirates.

Mets (-1.5)(7.0) @ Brewers
Johan Santana (3.93) vs. Yovani Gallardo (3.06)
My Pick: Mets 4-3
Why? This is a great pitching match up but we are taking a team that is awful at home and having them play the hottest team in the National League. Mets win.

Dodgers @ Rockies (-1.5)(9.5)
Carlos Monasterios (2.43) vs. Jeff Francis (1.60)
My Pick: Rockies 5-3
Why? Jeff Francis is a fantastic pitcher and now that he is back with the Rockies they are playing with even more confidence. Monasterios is coming out of the bullpen to make his second start. This is his first in Denver. Should be interesting.

Mariners (-1.5)(8.0) @ Angels
Cliff Lee (3.44) vs. Scott Kasmir (5.63)
My Pick: Mariners 4-3
Why? Because the Angels pitching is that bad. Kasmir has had maybe one or two good starts all season. The Mariners don't have spectacular offense but then again neither do the Angels. I see Lee going a good 7-8 innings with some solid pitching.

Nationals @ Padres (-1.5)(6.5)
John Lannan (5.23) vs. Clayton Richard (2.70)
My Pick: Padres 4-3
Why? I see this looking like a typical Padres win, great pitching with little offense but it will be clear that San Diego is going to come out the victor.

Diamondbacks @ Giants (-1.5)(7.5)
Edwin Jackson (6.07) vs. Matt Cain (3.07)
My Pick: Giants 5-3
Why? Jackson is not doing so well this season. Add in the worst bullpen in baseball and a team that's offense really turns it around at home and you've got a Giants win.
