Draft Stocks: Senior Bowl

This post season all star game was not as exciting as the East West Shrine Game but it did tell a lot about the prospects in the game. From the Weigh in to the to the Sound of the final horn at the end of the game these Senior prospects have been going head to head with the other top Senior prospects across the country. All eyes were on Tim Tebow even though he had a disappointing week but he was not even the biggest flop. The North won the game 31-13 and these are my Top Risers and Fallers from this weeks practices and games.

Sunday Jan 31st Picks

Hey there guys. I actually had my best day of picks, since I started up this blog, yesterday. State kept up their solid defense taking care of the SEC bottom feeder LSU 67-51, then Lucas Hargrove hit his free throw with 3 seconds left and Auburn won a nail biter 58-57, Kentucky took it to Vanderbilt from the start and while it wasn't a blowout it wasn't close either as the Wildcats won 85-72, and finally South Carolina, a.k.a. Devan Downey's team, won a close won as Downey hit a the go ahead layup with 50 seconds to go and than Georgia couldn't make their free throws and the Gamecocks won 78-77. In the NBA I went 4-2 and in the NHL I went 8-2. Well alright guys we've got 2 more SEC Men's Basketball games for you today as Arkansas heads to Oxford, MS to take on Ole Miss and Florida goes on the road to take on Tennessee. Oh and in the NBA don't forget to check out the LA Lakers @ Boston. That should be a good one as well. Alright guys let me know what you think.

Suck It!

Saturday Jan 30th

Hey there guys time for the Senior Bowl/Pro Bowl weekend which means I'll be watching football for some of the weekend. As far as my picks went last night I went 9-3 in the NBA and I went 4-2 in the NHL. Probably the best overall day I've had since I started this blog haha. Anyway today is also the big day of SEC Men's Basketball games and we've got some great games this afternoon with LSU @ Miss State, Alabama @ Auburn, Georgia @ South Carolina, and than of course the big one Vanderbilt @ Kentucky. Looks like this is going to be a fun weekend as this is also the LAST weekend before signing day this Wednesday. Well alright guys here we go as always just let me know what you think.

Thoughs on the Pro Bowl.....

PRO BOWL
NFC All-Stars vs. AFC All-Stars
Sunday January 31st
6:20pm
TV: ESPN
Line: Who Cares

Ok so I'm going to be completely honest... I hate that the Pro Bowl is a week early. I've never been a big fan of the Pro Bowl anyway. Look at other All Star Games. In the middle of the Season. Plenty of time to heal if they get injured. Off season isn't looming. Not the Pro Bowl. It's always been after the season had ended, and that only really affects the amount of viewers that watch the game. College Football ended a month earlier, Super Bowl over, and now even Arena Football isn't even going on anymore. Hardly anyone is thinking about football anymore. If they are they are thinking about NEXT season. No one cares about a meaningless game that doesn't affect the season or the Super Bowl. Its just hard to sell. Unless you're A) bored B) have a friend in the game C) have family in the game or D) are an NFL nerd you are more than likely not going to watch this game. All this game proves is one conference is better than the other. But no one cares about a All conference game. What they care about is the Super Bowl. Moving it one week ahead of the Super Bowl will get more viewers who are still aware that the Pro Bowl exists but will it be enough to save this over hyped all star game? doubtful..

But even if this wasn't for the viewers this game could have been for the players. Before players were getting an all expenses paid trip to HAWAII. I mean I realise with all the money that professional athletes make they could go there whenever they want in the off season, but this time everything was paid, they could go there with teammates, friends, and family and have a week of fun. Now they're going to Miami. Miami. When they stepped off the plane they got leis. When you step off the plane in Miami they have warnings about which neighborhoods to avoid. Not to mention how often during the season do players have the opportunities to go to Hawaii? During the regular season 8 different teams get to go to Miami. Plus 2 more during Preseason. And that's just this season. I mean the other teams in the AFC East travel there at least once a year. EVERY year. And WHAT ABOUT THE MIAMI DOLPHINS PLAYERS??? Who wants a paid vacation to the CITY THEY ALREADY LIVE IN?? This was a terrible idea. Not just dealing with location but what about timing? Yes more people will watch the game because it is before the super bowl but what about the players that just went through a grueling 16 game, 17 week season? What about the ones that just got done with the playoffs? Who has time to rest for a game that is meaningless? And than there are the players who are playing IN THE SUPER BOWL. When I think Pro Bowl QBs I like to think that Peyton Manning would be in the AFC side and Drew Brees on the NFC roster. Nope. They are playing in the Super Bowl. Go figure. So we've added maybe a few more viewers but we've pushed the players away from the game. Which by the way will turn away viewers...

The Pro Bowl has the best system of voting among all of the professional sports all star games. 2/5 of the vote comes from players, 2/5 comes from coaches, and 1/5 comes from fans. Essentially fans don't OWN the vote like they do in the rest of the All Star games. Players like Allen Iverson and Nomar Garciappara don't get to start despite playing less than half the season. This is the best system as far as voting goes. They get the players right but with all of the negative factors this turns its almost irrelevant if a PRO BOWL RECORD 30 players pull out of playing in the game. The Pro Bowl is supposed to be an honor. They're giving out more honors than normal this year.

I guess the real question is how do you fix this? To be honest in a game like football where you can really only play once a week, needing a bye week to keep yourself rested enough to be able to make it through the season, it's going to be tough to convince players to play during or right after a season. Look at the Senior Bowl and the East West Shrine Game for college football. They play a month after the last bowl game. Meaning that some players get over 3 months rest. But only die hard football fans really watch either of those games. And really they only watch the Senior Bowl (I watch both). What they might be able to do is use as much advertising as they've put into this year's pro bowl and move the Pro Bowl a month after. AND BACK TO HAWAII, there is an NFL team located near every state. Except Alaska and Hawaii. No one wants to Alaska. Sorry guys. But everyone wants a vacation to Hawaii. Advertising might get more people to watch it, moving it a month after the Super Bowl would allow players to be rested, and moving it back to Hawaii would attract players to come play. They might also give an added incentive to the game that might affect the season the following year somehow. I have never liked the way Major League Baseball has done their All Star game where the winning league gets home field advantage in the World Series. But as dumb as it is it might be what is necessary to keep the Pro Bowl around.

As of now talks have already begun about getting rid of the Pro Bowl altogether. If they want to keep it around moving it to Miami and a week before the Super Bowl has only hurt its' chances of survival.

Friday Jan 29th Picks

Hey there guys, yesterday was an ok day for me as far as picks go. Arkansas had a helluva 2nd half to pull out an upset of Miss State and Ole Miss downed Auburn to win back to back SEC road games for the first time since 2001. In NBA I went 2-1, and how about the Magic's Rashard Lewis beating Kevin Garnett along the baseline for the game winning layup? and than I went 4-4 in the NHL. No SEC games today but some good basketball games and some solid NHL games. Hope you guys enjoy.

Thursday Jan 28th Picks

Hey there guys yesterday was a pretty good day as far as picks goes. I went 7-4 in the NBA, 6-1 in the NHL, and 2-1 in SEC Basketball. Florida handled Georgia like I thought they would 87-71 and Alabama beat LSU holding to them to 38 points. Wow. My loss though came when Tennessee blew a second half lead to Vanderbilt 85-76. Oh well We've got some good games today with both Mississippi teams playing road games at division rivals. Well alright guys let me know you think.

Wednesday Jan 27th Picks

Hey there guys it's that time again. How about Devan Downey? I said South Carolina gives top teams scares and they did it again. Devan Downey is a one man machine, he single handedly lead close losses on the road to ranked Ole Miss and at Florida and than almost by himself lead a Gamecock upset of #1 Kentucky. Man. What a game. As far as the other sports I went 4-1 in NBA and 4-4, 50%, in NHL. We've got some good SEC games tonight and some great NBA games that I'm definitely going to be paying close attention to. Alright guys let me know what you think.

Alright guys well yesterday wasn't as bad as the day before as far as my NBA and NHL picks went as I went 6-3 in the NBA and 2-1 in the NHL. SEC Basketball has a game tonight with the newly ranked top team in the nation Kentucky Wildcats traveling to Columbia, SC to face the Gamecocks. Well alright guys as always please let me know what you think.

Draft stocks: East West Shrine Game

For those who missed it this past weekend was one of the better College Football games I've seen before, and even though it was about as vanilla as you can get (teams could not blitz, use motion, run trick plays, or attempt to block kicks) it was still interesting to see how the prospects fared here. The East vs. West Shrine Bowl is for the prospects who are more likely to end up on Day 2/3 of the draft but with a solid performance they might be able to move up to day 1. The game ended up with the East squad winning 13-10 on a touchdown from Northwestern QB Mike Kafka to Penn State TE Andrew Quarless with less than 10 seconds left. Here are the biggest movers and losers from this week of practice and the game itself.

Monday Jan 25th Picks

Alright guys I was writing this last night when I fell asleep on my computer. I was completely exhausted after watching the Saints game and screaming at the television. Yesterday was a rough day for me in the NBA and NHL games as I went 1-2 in both of those but I went 2-0 in the NFL as both of those games were absolutely great football games. Peyton Manning torched the Jets for 377 yards and 3 touchdowns and the Colts defense shut down the best rushing offense in the NFL holding them to 86 yards on 29 carries (averaged 172ypg). Then in one of the best football games I have ever watched the Saints defeated the Vikings 31-28 in overtime as the Vikings continuously coughed up opportunities and turned the ball over 5 times including 3 times in Saints territory (twice inside the 10) with the most notable being Favre, committing the ultimate quarterback mistake (throwing across his body over the middle), throwing an interception with the games tied at 28 and the Vikings in field goal range. Well I am hoping that that I can improve my records in the NBA and NHL as I have been in a slump for both recently. Anyway here are my picks let me know what you guys think.

Sunday Jan 24th Picks

Alright guys it was an ok day as far as my picks went. I went 4-2 today in my SEC Men's Basketball Picks losing Miss State @ Alabama as the Bulldogs went cold from behind the arc and the Tide got a tough conference win at home. I also lost Tennessee @ Georgia and I'll be honest in hindsight i should've seen this coming, even though I called for a close game, which the Volunteers have been excelling in, I should've realised that Georgia was at its best when facing ranked teams. As for the other games Vanderbilt won a close one at home against an improving Auburn team 82-74, Ole Miss played a sloppy game against a scrappy under manned LSU team and won 73-63, Kentucky lead by as many as 45 in this one as they coasted to a 101-70 blowout of Arkansas, and last but certainly not least the Gators of Florida won on a last second 3 despite an incredible effort by South Carolina's Devan Downey 58-56. In the NBA I went 7-3 and in the NHL I went 7-5. Alright guys its going to be a slow Sunday as far as other Sports but there are the big NFL Conference games tomorrow. Here are my picks:

Urban Meyer back?

A couple of months ago Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer announced that the Sugar Bowl was going to be the last game he would ever coach. He was retiring. His health was bad and he just couldn't do it anymore.

A couple of days after that Meyer announced that he was only taking a leave of absence. That he would sit out this upcoming season. OC Steve Addazio would be the interim coach for the 2010 season in his absence.

Than Florida demolishes Cincinnati amid rumors that Meyer was actively recruiting. Now he is saying that he will back for spring practice? While I'm sure Gator fans are ecstatic to have him back I'm just curious as to what has just happened. How do you go from thinking that your career as a college head coach is over and than less than a month and a half away say you're coming back? I don't know if this was an emotional decision at first, if they got a second opinion and things aren't as bad, or if he just said to hell with it if I die I die. Naturally there have been all kinds of rumors that range from him having had heart problems in the past to using this as a "Lane Kiffen-esque" kind of publicity move for recruiting or even to motivate the team for the Sugar Bowl. Whatever the reason Urban Meyer will be back for this next season.

Saturday Jan 23rd Picks

Hey there guys,

This blog will be more dedicated to the sport of football and more so towards the college side. But I've decided to try to stretch my coverage of sports to more than just college football. I've tested out how i've done so far in NFL, NBA, NHL, and SEC Men's Basketball and have my current picks record kept to the left of the page. Anyway my picks for the games on Saturday go like this

I own Tebow's Tears

Hey there guys,

This is my first time doing stuff with a blog and it was alot more frustrating than you might think. But i'm hoping it will be worthwhile. The toughest part was choosing a name. Because this is my first time ever trying to do something like this i had didn't really know the proper steps to choosing a name. Like say making sure that somebody wasn't blogging under the name you chose (Powe's Catfish Shack), or that there wasn't a website already like the one you chose (Tebow's Tears/Tebow Tears), or that the name actually has something to do with what you're writing about (Greg Hardy School of Art... not to mention there really is an artist named Gregory Hardy). In learning from my mistakes i accidentally on purpose bought all 3 of those names. But i being an Ole Miss fan writing about sports i feel like Land Sharks represent everything the SEC is about. Defense. And kicking ass.

Anyway the basics of Where the Land Sharks Are will be covered by me and two of my friends. Hockey, Baseball, Basketball, and Mainly Football (and all its like) will be the main topic of discussion on this blog brought to you in an opinionated, funny, and serious way.

As always guys I love to hear what you think and as the Terrarium grows I will continue to improve (hopefully) the writing, layout, and overall entertainment for you, my readers.

Thank You for Reading,
Batteman
